Need advice on detachable electric power steering for formula student car.

    Posted: 08 Sep 2020 05:06 AM PDT

We are building an electrical formula student car (google it) and we are looking for some advice. The car is electric and our goal is to create a detachable driverless system for it.

    These are the requirements:

    1. The driverless steering "module(s)" should preferably be detachable.
    2. You need to be able to drive it manually even with the driverless system attached (but turned off).
    3. Drive by wire is allowed but there needs to be a mechanical backup in case of electrical failure.

Making it driverless is fairly straight forward if the modules can be permanently attached to the steering, but that adds unnecessary weight for when we are competing in manual mode (without the driverless technology).
