Luminar technologies to expand its product roadmap to full-stack highway automated driving solution Posted: 09 Sep 2020 07:08 AM PDT Luminar Technologies that is known for developing a long-range, high-resolution Lidar expands itself into systems solution provider to OEMs for highway automated driving and safety features. It has already announced a series production win from Volvo. Lidar has been put aside by Tier-1's and OEMs developing ADAS and SAE L1 to L3 solutions due to its high cost. Companies that intend to provide an L4 solution with a service model can afford to use it like Waymo and Uber. What are the advantages with a Lidar-only based solution over a camera + radar based solution? What extra features or functionalities can be realized with a Lidar-only based system? Why would someone buy a costly vehicle with a Lidar that would have otherwise costed much cheaper with a camera + radar based solution? Tier 1's and OEMs are able to already achieve ADAS and L1 to L3 automation levels with camera and radar that are an order of magnitude (may be several) cheaper than a Lidar. For example, Diamler's highway driving pilot costs 1700 USD when each camera and radar cost less than a 100 USD. A Lidar costs more than 1700 USD, I guess. [link] [comments] | ||
