Better degree for career in SDCs - CE or CS?

    Posted: 13 Jun 2020 01:35 PM PDT

Hello! I'm just a lowly Information Technology student with his associate's degree nearly completed. I'm planning on transferring to a four-year school and I'd like to ask if Computer Engineering or Computer Science is more sought after or preferred in the field. I feel as though autonomous vehicles are my calling. I've always been into technology and I absolutely loved driving, which I haven't done in nearly ten years. Mixing the two just seems like perfection to me.

Right now, I'm doing a summer STEM program at my local community college where I'm doing two projects: Ethical Hacking with Computer Viruses Using C++ and Electric Vehicle Conversion. The former is my very first steps in coding and I've learned a lot in the past few weeks. Obviously, if I'd be an autonomous vehicles engineer, my code would have to be spot-on because safety and reliability are paramount. I've got a long way to go in learning to code. The latter is very much hardware-based to the point that my project mentor, an electrical engineer, is telling me to have less of a software-based mindset with the project.

I've always very much seen the world in a "tangible" kind of way, so I've been working to get into Computer Engineering at my target school. The school is the Stevens Institute of Technology in Hoboken. It's in my area and money isn't an issue, so I'd like to get a doctorate. I'm totally open to moving to California when the time comes for me to start my career. I'm thinking of joining the SAE Club when I get to Stevens, but that's really a mechanical engineering thing.

I could delve into the programs of study and provide more information if needed, but in general, what would be preferred? Also, while there are plenty of options, does Waymo hire Computer Engineering degree-holders? I know that Google has a known history of hiring Computer Science degree-holders. I also know that I'm asking this when I don't know what the landscape will be when I'll be ready to start my career. Thanks!

    Self-driving anxiety?

    Posted: 12 Jun 2020 05:53 PM PDT

I'm wondering if there's a "trust curve" people tend to experience with any of these autonomous driving modes. The theory behind the system is to make driving a more relaxing and enjoyable experience, but have you ever found the opposite to be true? Not knowing if the car really sees that 18-wheeler entering the on-ramp or not, or if your spidey senses are telling you some jackass is going to cut you off and if the car can avoid a catastrophe from the "unexpected". I'd like to order something like the Comma2 but if I'm going to be spending more time paying attention to if the car is stable than I would if I just held the wheel then it would be all for nothing.
