Most self-driving development work is done behind closed doors. We don't really know how far GM or Waymo or MobilEye or anybody else really is.

So far the conversations we're having here are mostly speculation-based. What little information we do have is from PR departments of players with skin in the game, which makes them only arguably less reliable than speculation.

But in 2020, for the first time, we'll see the process in real-time. Yes - there have been Tesla Autopilot videos aplenty. But even Tesla wasn't claiming they are closing in on self-driving. Until yesterday's "FSD preview" release, which purports to be "feature-complete".

And as is normal for Tesla, everything is out in the open. With each software release, we can see new capabilities. We know what the system is seeing, and what is it missing. We can tell how close, or how far, they are.

We'll see how long the tail is. People will start using Tesla Autopilot in urban environments, on side-roads, in the rain, etc. etc. etc.

Finally, we'll be able to have an informed conversation.

Besides Tesla, can a consumer buy any other cars with self driving hardware?

I know Tesla is far from true FSD and there is debate about whether they need lidar. Nevertheless, I am wondering if a consumer can buy anything that has a suite of similar sensors. I've seen impressive videos of Mobileye, for example, but not familiar with any cars that actually incorporate their technology besides maybe lane-keep-assist or some low level stuff. And obviously Waymo isn't selling cars to consumers. Supercruise seems to be some kind of geofenced autopilot by all accounts (at least with respect to what's currently publicly available). So I'm wondering if I'm overlooking something. I guess there's that stuff by George Hotz / comma.ai. But that seems to be just a couple of cameras, if I recall correctly.

Are there any plans for any other manufacturers to sell cars to consumers with a full suite of sensors the way Tesla is?

    Thanks
