Interesting to notice - folks who honk at Waymo vehicles

    Posted: 08 Mar 2020 12:15 PM PDT

At this point, most everyone in Chandler is--at the very least--superficially aware of Waymo, given how common a sight they've become. It makes me wonder when the public will begin to understand the futility of honking at a Waymo vehicle.

In my case, I was standing near the pickup zone in a parking lot, and started to walk towards the van while it approached, as you do. Unfortunately it interpreted my absent-minded move as an intent to cross the street and hesitated, (as it should, definitely my fault here) much to the annoyance of an old couple behind it, who proceeded to lay on the horn. Perhaps the antagonists were--what Arizona residents lovingly refer to them as--snowbirds; retired people who flood into the state during winter, then retreat north once the daily highs start pushing 90. (Incidents like these make me lose hope that I'll continue to keep up with technology even into old age.)

The car can almost certainly hear the horn, as it does sirens, yet I'd put down money that such a horn wouldn't make an AV alter its decision to err on the side of caution. Though amusing in this instance, it makes me wonder what other fun motorist behavior Waymo safety drivers must put up with on a daily basis... I can't wait until transportation in this city is 100% automated.

    Questions about OpenPilot

    Posted: 08 Mar 2020 10:41 AM PDT

I've been trying to find the discord for openpilot but all the invite links seem to be expired. Can anyone get me an invite link?

Also, is it possible to disable the driver management that requires eyes to be looking at the road? I would really never do this but I am just curious.

Lastly, how strict is the DM? Is it possible to look down at your phone momentarily to read and send text messages? Can you read the news as long as you look up every few seconds? Is this dangerous to do?

I'm just trying to get a feel for how the DM system works, not trying to be reckless.

Cars already dominate rail for share of travel. Self driving cars will be the advancement needed to end expensive rail subsidies while improving mobility.

The information found here shows the market share of travel by mode in the Northeast Corridor. It provides a very disturbing reality that many passenger rail advocates should take into account. The idea of "build it and they will come" just doesn't hold true. The Northeast Corridor is supposed to be the pinnacle of US passenger rail, but even there, its market share is very weak. The Northeast Corridor passenger services have been around for over 100 years and have seen many improvements over the years, but ridership just isn't there. The car is just too fast and convenient for rail to be a viable alternative. What is worse (for rail) is that self driving cars will immensely improve the experience of using the automobile, making any advantages taking the train had, a thing of the past. Of course, this will mean fewer and fewer people will take the train in the future. Maybe its time to stop investing so heavily in rail infrastructure projects. They don't serve a significant part of the population, and the people that take the train could easily switch to driving and taking the bus. With expensive projects and improvements needed just to keep rail services going, maybe it's time to reconsider where our priorities for transport infrastructure should lie.
